A fun blog about high school counselors 😉
At first glance, your high school counselor may seem like a relatively dull figure. But believe it or not, there’s a lot more to us than meets the eye. We’re actually quite interesting people, even if we do spend our days talking to hormonal teenagers. Here are 10 things you probably didn’t know about your school counselor.
1. We’re actually really good at our jobs. Contrary to popular belief, we didn’t become counselors because we couldn’t hack it in the “real world.” We chose this career because we genuinely care about helping others and making a difference in the lives of young people. Yes, it can be challenging at times, but that’s what makes it so rewarding.
2. We have a great sense of humor. Even though we deal with some pretty heavy topics on a daily basis, that doesn’t mean we don’t know how to have a good time. In fact, humor is one of our biggest tools when it comes to dealing with teens. A big part of our job is diffusing tense situations with a little bit of levity.
3. We’re not mind readers (unfortunately). Sure, we might seem like we know everything about you, but that’s only because we’ve been doing this for a long time and have a lot of experience. We’re not actually psychic (despite what some of the students might think).
4. We love what we do…most of the time. Let’s be honest – working with teenagers isn’t always easy. But even on the hardest days, we can still find joy in our work because we know how important it is. We may not always show it, but we really do care about each and every one of our students.
5. …but sometimes we need a break too. Just like everyone else, there are days when we just need to veg out in front of the TV or take a long nap. Don’t worry, though – we always come back refreshed and ready to help you with whatever you need.
6. Our door is always open…literally and figuratively. If you ever need to talk to us about something important, all you have to do is knock on our door (or send us an email). We promise we’ll always make time for you – even if it means rescheduling our lunch break or staying late after school occasionally.
7. …but sometimes you have to wait your turn. Due to the nature of our job, there are going to be times when we just can’t drop everything and attend to you immediately (no matter how much we might want to). Just know that even if we can’t talk to you right away, we will as soon as humanly possible – and in the meantime, feel free to grab one of the candy bars from our secret stash (we won’t tell anyone).
8.We get attached…to both the good and the bad parts of high school life.. Working as a counselor means seeing students grow and change over time – and sometimes that growth isn’t always positive.. But no matter what happens, know that we’re always here for you – even if you’ve made some poor choices or are struggling academically or socio-emotionally.. Because at the end of the day, our goal is to see every single one of our students succeed.. in whatever way that may look for them..
And finally… 9..10.. Just kidding! As much as we love talking about ourselves,.We realize this post might’ve made us sound like total egomaniacs…But that’s not really true!.We just wanted everyone to know a little bit more about us – warts and all! – so that they feel comfortable coming to us with anything they might need.. No matter what it is,.We’re here for YOU.. Not just during distance learning or hybrid/virtual instruction either – but FOREVER!.Feel free to reach out anytime!.”;)
I hope this list has given you a better understanding of who your school counselor is and what they do on a day-to-day basis! Counselors are an important part of every high school student’s life, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you ever need anything – no matter how big or small it may be! 🙂
